Slight change
We were recently looking over some of our past posts and noticed that the savings percentage we calculated looked a lot better than we felt upon leaving the store. That’s when we realized that we were essentially counting our +Up rewards/ECBs twice: once when we received them (in the rebates/extra rewards section) and again when we used them (and hence lowered our paid @ register amount). So, in the name of accuracy we will no longer be counting extra rewards until we actually use them. This will ensure that we only count everything once and our savings percentage should now be directly proportional to the amount of giddiness we feel when we walk out of the store.
bryter-layter asked: I have a friend who sent a letter to M&Ms and put an M&M in the envelope telling them that she put two M&Ms between her fingers and one would always smash and that one defeated all of the others and they should use it for M&M breeding purposes. She got a 1$ off a bag of M&Ms, I believe.
Hahaha! Thanks for sharing. If we find any mutated candy, we’ll be sure to send them to the original company in exchange for coupons.
Has anyone had any success emailing companies and asking them for free samples or coupons?
Scoping out some awesome deals
Store: Rite Aid
Date: 10/04/2011
What we got:
- 1 bottle of Full size Scope mouthwash + 1 sample size Scope mouthwash — Normally $4.79; on sale for $4.00; we used a $1.50 off coupon; final price $2.50
- 1 Oral-B Complete Action toothbrush — Normally $7.99; on sale for $5.99; we used a $3.00 of coupon; final price $2.99
- 2 bottles of Dove Shampoo/Conditioner — Normally $4.99 ea; on sale for $3.50 ea; we used a BOGO MFR coupon and a $2 off Rite Aid coupon; final price $1.50 for both
- 1 tube of Crest Complete toothpaste — Normally $3.99; on sale for $2.59; we used a $1 off coupon; final price $1.59
- 2 travel size tubes of John Frieda full repaid — Normally $1.49 ea; final price $1.49 ea
Note: We used $10.19 in +up rewards to lower our cost, but we got the following +up rewards back: $2.50 in +up rewards from the Scope mouthwash and $5.00 in +up rewards for the John Frieda tubes. In addition, we got $2.99 back in a rebate from the toothbrush and $1.60 back in a rebate from the toothpaste.
Extra Note: Rite Aid really messed up with their John Frieda deal. They had an offer where you got $5 +up rewards when you buy any two bottles of John Frieda product. This deal also applied to their travel size John Frieda products which only cost $1.49 ea, giving a big overage when you buy 2. The first Rite Aid we went to had a clear sign on the travel size bottles telling of the deal. However, they were out of the product so we asked for a rain check and the manager was so stunned by the deal, she took down the tags from the rack and only wrote us a rain check after some stern words from us. We then went to a second Rite Aid and it had the John Frieda travel size tubes in stock but the +up rewards didn’t print. When we told them we were missing our +up rewards, they didn’t believe us. Once again, we showed them the sign and the manager was flabbergasted by the deal and took it down and hesitantly scribbled a note that we should receive $5 off our next purchase (since their stupid system doesn’t allow +up rewards to be printed manually). In conclusion: Rite Aid managers aren’t aware of the deals the store has going and don’t hesitate to rip off deal stickers for their own benefit. Always come to the store knowing their policy and with an ad in hand!

Summary:
Cost before any deals: $29.73
Paid @ register: $1.37
Rebates/Extra Rewards: $12.09
Final cost: $-10.72
That’s 136% savings!
